Which ceiling fan brands rank highest on CFM/W?

Measured against fans of the same blade span and mount type, Aeratron (+48.5%), Hunter (+23.4%) and Harbor Breeze (+15.4%) lead the 16 brands with ten or more certified listings. RP Lighting + Fans trails at −34.3%. Seven of the 16 brands sit above the typical fan of their sizes.

Why raw brand medians mislead

Larger fans post higher CFM/W figures on the certified list, so a brand that sells mostly 60- and 72-inch fans would beat a brand that sells mostly 52-inch fans even if every one of its models were average for its size. Comparing raw medians rewards the size mix, not the fans.

The size-adjusted index takes that out. Each of a brand's standard and hugger listings is compared with the median of its own group, the same span and the same mount, and the brand's index is the median of those percentage gaps. HSSD fans are left out, because their figure is weighted differently. The full method is on How we rank.

The difference is large. On raw standard-fan medians E17 would rank 11th of 16; on the index it ranks 7th of 16. Minka Aire goes the other way, from 7th on raw medians to 11th on the index.

The leaders

Aeratron has the highest index, and 89% of its rated listings sit above the median of their group. The brand's lineup is small, 18 listings across 3 blade spans, so a handful of very strong models can carry the brand. Hunter is the more striking case: with 89 listings it is one of the largest brands on the list and still sits +23.4% above its peers, with 68% of its listings above the group median.

Records tell a similar story. Counting only groups of ten or more fans, Aeratron holds the top CFM/W in 6 of them, more than any other brand.

Brand medians span by span

The matrix below shows each profiled brand's median CFM/W for standard fans in the main spans, where it has at least three such models. Reading across a row shows how consistent a brand is from size to size; reading down a column compares brands on equal terms.

Median CFM/W of standard fans; a dash means fewer than three models at that span.

A brand can sit near the top at one span and near the bottom at another; Hunter, for one, leads at 44 and 52 inches and trails at 68 to 72. That is why every brand page on this site lists the fans span by span instead of giving one overall score.

Size of lineup and score

The three largest brands on the list by listings are Visual Comfort & Co. (116), Hunter (89) and Modern Forms (66). Their indices are +4.1%, +23.4% and −5.0%, so a large lineup comes with very different results. The smallest profiled brands, with between ten and twenty listings, include both the top brand and some of the weakest, which is one reason the index is only given where at least five listings can be rated.

Brands sold under more than one name

Some certified fans appear on the list under two or more brand names with identical test results. This site counts each such fan once and files it under the name with the most listings: Fanimation (also sold as Fanimation Studio Collection), Visual Comfort & Co. (also sold as Monte Carlo) and CEME (also sold as Carro, CE, Smaair, Smafan, Smair and Trifecte). The brand pages say so in their opening lines, and the fan table's brand filter uses the same names, so a fan never counts twice in a median.

The other end

RP Lighting + Fans has the lowest index of the 16 brands. Only 3% of the brand's rated listings reach the median of their group, and the brand's 52-inch fans, where most of the brand's models sit, sit well below the span median. That is a statement about its certified fans as listed, not about any one model, and the brand page lists every fan with its own rank.

What the index does not say

The index covers certified fans only and measures one thing, CFM/W against same-size peers. It ignores watts, light kits, finishes and anything the list does not record. Brands with fewer than ten listings are not profiled, because a few fans cannot carry a stable median; they appear in the brand directory with an index only when five or more of their listings can be rated.
